LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE

How often have you drunk water directly from the tap? Well, these young children from Tshatshi Primary School, Pema Gatshel, Bhutan, have been doing so for a long time. This resulted in a lot of children falling sick and missing the school. These young superheroes brought water boilers for each grade and also spread awareness for safe and pure drinking water in their neighbourhood.

Lesson Plan

  • Hook: Show this video to your students and pause the video at the timing of 1:26 and pose a question to your students. ‘Why is it not good to have direct tap water for drinking purpose?’ ‘Why are they talking about boiled water in this movie?’, ‘How can we find out the difference between the tap water and boiled water?’
  • The teacher can take this discussion further in the lab and have an introductory session for students to introduce different instruments and how they help to see beyond what our eyes can’t see.
  • The teacher can keep two slides ready to be seen under the microscope – one with tap water and another with boiled water.
  • After showing the slide 1 and slide 2 ask children why the slides are different and what are they of?
  • Lead the conversation to tap water and boiled water – Ask children to go home and observe their water purification system.
  • An expert from a water filter company can be invited to share more about the purification process and answer questions listed by children.
  • The teacher can have a session regarding different methods of purification. This can also be given as a group work for children to go find good old methods of purification or the scientific method of purification.
  • Try the experiments in your science labs and then again check the purified water under the microscope.
  • Close the loop by asking children to share the different instruments used to see what our eyes can’t see and also different methods of purification.
  • Ask them to go share the importance of drinking purified water to other grades in the school, to parents at home and to the teacher team too.
