Observation, recording, team work

Age Group

11-12 years / Grade 6

Prerequisite

Students should have previous knowledge about the hydrosphere and water cycle.

LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE

This is an inspiring story of change from PUMS, Tamil Nadu, India, where children were bothered by the issue of dumping plastic bottles causing drainage blocks. They came up with a simple solution of using those bottles to build an economical compound wall. With this experience of creativity, teamwork and environmental awareness, students can see a practical experience of how their core strengths are useful; creativity and both scientific and logical-mathematical thinking are mixed for a common good.

Lesson Plan

  • Show the presentation (16 slides) to the children. Discuss pollution and water, what is happening with all the plastics that we use every day?

Importance of recycling.

As well as they have seen in the video, everything has a “cycle of life”. In the video they can see a solid object, but what happens with liquids? Introduce the water cycle.

  • Once students know more about the water cycle, can make a research of how pollution affects to the hydrosphere, working on groups:
    1. Plastics, how they are affecting to our oceans
    2. Recycling concept, chasing arrows recycling emblem
    3. Global warming, changes in oceans temperature
    4. Pollution: how does it affect to rain?
  • What could we do for avoiding all this pollution? Every change makes a difference! School project: Every group has to explain to others what they know now. Tip: students can be as original as they want! Can create posters and put them in different parts of the school, or make a theatre, a song…
