LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE

This is an inspiring story of change where an eleven-year-old Rishikesh from PUMS, Tamil Nadu, India was bothered about fishermen tragically drowning at sea. Disturbed by these stories, and knowing that most fishermen cannot afford safety gear, he started thinking about designing a product that could help fishermen stay afloat, at zero cost. This video is an absolute inspiration for innovation and how children can drive the change. It is a great testimony to 'BE the change you want to see in the world'.

Lesson Plan

  • .Show the video. Ponder about this: What do we know about the oceans, how does water move?
  • Get students to work in groups: What risks can be created by water to people? Each team has to think about different risks. TIP: Tsunami, Floods, Pollution in water…
  • Groups have to make posters, making others aware of the problem they have been thinking about. TIP: Ask students to be creative! They can think about helping people suffering from these problems
  • Communication: As a class, they can select a problem to focus. Want to help others? TIP: The students can collect things for people affected by floods in your country. Think about prototypes as the one seen in the story used. Do talks explaining how to avoid some of this problems and sensitize other people around.
