LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE

This is an inspiring story of change where an eleven-year-old Rishikesh from PUMS, Tamil Nadu, India was bothered about fishermen tragically drowning at sea. Disturbed by these stories, and knowing that most fishermen cannot afford safety gear, he started thinking about designing a product that could help fishermen stay afloat, at zero cost. This video is an absolute inspiration for innovation and how children can drive the change. It is a great testimony to 'BE the change you want to see in the world'.

Lesson Plan

  • Show the video. Ponder about this: How can we help people to face fewer risks?
  • Make groups: Students have to make a research about how can they help people. What risks do regular people face every day? TIP: Encourage students to ask people, they can do a survey, go for a walk around the city and ask people!
  • Each group has to explain to others what they have discovered. TIP: It would be great if they can show some video, statistics…
  • Each group will develop a prototype, as the one exposed in the story, the jacket made by bottles. TIP: Remember to design with users, not only for users!
  • Environmental friendly - The more we take care about our planet, the better, can we reuse materials for our prototype. TIP: Recycling emblem always in the mind of the students, Reuse-Reduce-Recycle!
  • Communication: Ask students to think about different ways they can showcase their work. TIP: can organize an exhibition with all the inventions!
