LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE

This is an inspiring story of a team of students from Rural Educational Institution, Quindio, Colombia, who came together and helped their municipality by working on the major cause of pollution due to the coffee industry. To combat this, they created Eco logs with the waste of coffee residue to replace wood and coal that the farmers are using in the coffee drying machines and at the fire places in their homes. These Eco logs are now being used by several farms with a positive and a sustainable result.

Lesson Plan

  • Students can do in-depth research on health advantages and disadvantages of coffee. The results obtained can be brought to the classroom in order to carry out a discussion. Then the results can be shared with the community writing an article in the school's magazine/newsletter.

  • What health impact is pollution having? How does it affect our everyday life? Students can do research how polluted their hometown is and make some proposals to reduce pollution. How could they be implemented? Students can ask experts in the area in order to have a better understanding. Then students can get in touch with their mayor in order to explain her/him the research they have carried out.
