LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE

This is an inspiring story of young superheroes from Holy Cross Lutheran, Hongkong. They were bothered about their school spaces with less greenery around. They took up the responsibility to get an understanding of different types of plants, how to sow the seeds and how to take care of the plants. They involved other students from their school to take care of the plants and finally were successful to create a greener school.

Lesson Plan

  • Hook: Show the video and get your students to be inspired by these young superheroes from Hongkong.
  • You can take your students out of the classroom and ask them to identify the different types of plants/trees on your school campus/neighbourhood. Suggestion: Science teachers can take a session about different types of plants. For example - https://youtu.be/mlqJH7v3Kf8
  • Ask students to find out the characteristics of the plants/trees. They can do research, ask questions / read books/ use net
  • Once students have all the information about different plants/trees in their vicinity, introduce them to Mesostic Poems.  A Mesostic is a poem or other text arranged so that a vertical phrase intersects lines of horizontal text. It is similar to an acrostic, but with the vertical phrase intersecting somewhere in the midst of the line, as opposed to the beginning of each line.
  • Ask students to create Mesostic poems for the plants/trees they connect the most with. For example:

                   Tall

                                                                                 treEs

                                                                                alwAys

                                                                              very Kind

  • Create a placard, laminate it and place it near the plant/tree to get more information about the same. Suggestion: Science session can be conducted to understand the scientific names of the plants/trees
  • Share the Mesostic poems with entire school/parent body/visitors at the school
